Kyan Sensei and youthful students in pre-war Okinawa. Joen Nakazato, founder of Shorinji-ryu, is pictured far left. Nakazato Sensei, now in his 80's, is the last surviving student of Kyan. He still teaches at his home overlooking the sea in Chinen, Okinawa, where I visited him in 2003.
